A common symbol in pagan and classical art. Chimeras represent the destructive nature of the unknown. They are a gateway to the forces that perplex us humans. In some ways. they are a contradiction. both omens and protectors. In ancient Egyptian culture. the Ibis was a protector against snakes and plagues. and a mummified bird was often a votive offering accompanying spirits crossing over into the afterlife. playing a symbolic role in the rituals surrounding death. In ancient European cultures. hounds were often associated with death and yet. also with loyalty. Snakes too were an omen of death but one shedding its skin represented rebirth. The motif of fire was also associated with destruction but also purification in most ancient cultures. This particular chimera is a combination of these elements and was born out of my inquiry into pagan cultures.
